The AFA is a non-profit advocacy organization
standing for “traditional family values” and focusing
on the influence of television and other media on our
society. The AFA primarily challenges issues contradictory
to “traditional family values” (abortion, gay
rights, and pornography), taking a very conservative
approach to its work. The organization usually
focuses on issues directly affecting the family, but it
also addresses issues relating to the criminal justice
system such as capital punishment. While the ASA
does support capital punishment, it is critical of the
current system which employs it. “Under today’s
justice system, there is a greater likelihood the death
penalty will be imposed on minorities and the poor.
When the penalty is the taking of human life by execution,
it is imperative our system treats each individual
fairly and judges them on merits other than their
skin color and financial status. Secondly, vengeance is
often the underlying motive for Americans in any
given capital case.”
