The IRPL describes itself as “an interreligious,
nonpartisan research and education institute whose
purpose is to advance a religiously informed public
philosophy for the ordering of society.” It was
founded by Richard John Neuhaus, a Catholic priest
and leading neoconservative. IRPL publishes the
journal First Things. It has received funding from
the main conservative foundations and counts leading
neoconservative scholars, commentators, and
activists on its Editorial Advisory Board, including
Jean Bethke Elshtain and Glenn Loury.
Neoconservative activist and scholar Midge Decter
serves on the advisory board of First Things, and
conservative ideologue John DiIulio has written for
the journal.
